CASE STUDY – UNDERWATER SECURITY

The European Commission FP7 project Security UPgrade for PORTs (SUPPORT) shows the adaptability of the Simulator technology to machine learning objectives and the development of new simulation capabilities in a fault-intolerant domain.

SonarSim delivered a machine vision support framework to accelerate the design cycle and reduce the costs of developing a novel SONAR based Port & Harbour security and threat detection AUV system.

Focused primarily on the simulation of Forward Looking and Mechanically Scanning SONAR imagery, the project required the development of novel simulation components for modelling the acoustic signature of schooling fish shoals, mammals, diver gas discharge, diver swim locomotion, moored and passing vessels, port walls, shallow water sea surface reverberation, and seabed backscattering.

Two Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), specifically developed for the SUPPORT project, were demonstrated in the Port of Lisbon in May 2014.

Developed by BMT Group UK in partnership with Bristol Robotics Laboratory and SonarSim, the AUV was one of three elements of this 21 partner €15 million project.
